The beginning of this academic year has seen visits to the historically significant places in Ahmedabad city as well as to different homes in the surrounding. At the same time the school was addressed by a dietician.

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)

In LOWER KINDERGARTEN, as a part of their unit 'Who am I?', the children learnt some English rhymes and basic greeting etiquettes. They have learnt to use communication (listening) skills effectively in order to follow the instructions. They have also learnt how to draw standing and sleeping lines by joining dots, understood various types of lines and learnt to use oil pastel and water colours for the same thus enhancing their communication (writing) skill. They have learnt to identify their various body parts and made the model of a girl/boy from clay. They have learnt how to write 'one' in figures and can count up to number five. In music, students have learnt four songs ('chanda ne pucha taron se, one two cha cha cha, and paper man paper man, Manu bhai ni motor chali') and know how to operate the keyboard and play bongo. In dance, students have learnt synchronizing their dance steps. The students were also made aware of the cafeteria etiquettes (washing hands, no food wastage, using spoon & fork etc).

In HIGHER KINDERGARTEN, under the unit 'Families & Friends', the students shared information about their family and friends thus enhancing their oral communication skills; were told stories and learnt rhymes. The students drew the picture of their family and friends and learnt vocabulary related to them.  The students drew pictures and traced the hand print of their best friend. The students filled various colouring sheets related to number 1-6 and matched numbers with the number of objects. With the help of beads they have learnt to count and have made a collection of specific number of beads as asked by the teacher. In Visual arts, the students understood about an important element of art and design i.e. strokes.

In GRADE 1, as a part of their ongoing unit ‘Home’, the students were explained the importance of having a house, its different parts, people who help build it and the materials that can be used for the same. They learnt some Hindi vocabulary related to houses viz. 'Baithak, Rasoighar, Kaksh, Khand, Bhojan Kaksh, Abhyaas Khand, Charpai, Kursi, Mej, Aalmari' etc. In Visual arts, the students started with simple shapes for the topic ‘My home’. The students were taken for an educational trip to explore different kinds of homes in the locality as well as to 'Home Town'. The students learnt recitation of numbers 1-50, number recognition, value and writing for numbers 1-9. They were made aware of the concepts big/small, more/ less and were introduced to shapes-Square and Circle. In dance, students learnt various steps of one, two and three claps along with footsteps and performed on English music.  

In GRADE 2, for the ongoing unit ‘Human Body’, the students learnt about some systems of the human body viz. the skeleton system, muscular system and nervous system. They also learnt about all the five senses and the various functions of the body. An educational CD was shown to them and they learnt about the external and internal parts of the body and their importance. The topic measurement has also been initialized, students learnt about objects which have capacity to fill in things. They were taught the concept of missing numbers, small or big numbers and arranging the numbers from smallest to largest and the concept of lighter and heavier. They have even learnt to fill in the missing numbers to complete the addition and subtraction. They learnt the concept of fractions and the place value up to three digits i.e. units or ones, tens and hundreds place.  In dance, the students learnt the various steps of one clap, two claps and three claps with counts on English music. In Visual arts, the students were explained the use of thick and thin lines in basic drawing.

In GRADE 3, the unit ‘Creating A Better World’, began with the students understanding the concept of making the world a better place to live. To get the students aligned to the central idea there were story telling sessions wherein stories from the Panchatantra were read out to them and role playing of these stories was also done. Further extracts from the lives of Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela were studied and discussed. The students have also started reading the book ‘The Tales of Robin Hood’. The concept of creative writing has also been introduced. They were given an illustration to observe and rewrite in their own words what they perceived in the picture. The students thus have begun to understand the importance of proper communication and understanding other people’s views. To put this thought into practice a system of having a ‘worry box’ in the class has been devised where in the students pen down their worries or disputes on a piece of paper and put it in the worry box which is opened once a week and through discussions and talks these conflicts or worries are resolved. The students have learnt about composition drawing and have drawn live still-life drawing. In dance, the students learnt different foot and hand steps on English music.

In GRADE 4, the students were introduced to the unit ‘Our city’, where they were taken for a field trip to different heritage monuments of Ahmedabad to explore its past. Students practiced a skit based on the theme-Ahmedabad city. The students initiate the class with the presentation of daily news as read by them through newspaper to get an insight into the world news. The children have learnt about Data handling in Mathematics that includes data collection through Survey, Venn diagram and Tally marks and Probability. The students played different games based on the concept of probability like coin game, dice game, marble game etc. The students have begun sketching. In Music, students have learnt to sing sa re ga ma in proper swara and method and are learning bongo. In Dance, the students learnt the basic steps of Rock Dance. The students have are learning dribbling (low, medium and high) and pass (chest and bounce) in basketball.

In GRADE 5, the unit 'India' began with the students getting familiar to the physical map of India and quizzes and games pertaining to the topic were organized. As an extension to the unit, the students read the poem ‘India’ by W. J. Turner and critically analyzed it. Taking help of the poem, the students had to write an essay “Jungles of India”. They read the story ‘Astrologer’s Day’ by R. K. Narayan and then wrote the story in their own words with the help of the outline given to them by the teacher. The students were explained about the constitution of India and read a poem in Hindi. The students studied about the animal kingdom. They learnt how to write 8-9 digit numbers according to Indian place value chart and the International Place value chart. They compared the difference between these two number systems. In Visual arts, the students started with a very important element of art- colour. The students have begun learning Rock dance, Garba and Dodhiyu.

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)

In GRADE 6, the students learnt about the social effects of the Industrial Revolution in the theme 'Influence of revolutions on the family values, patterns & attitudes'. The students worked collaboratively in groups & made presentations on the information collected. Discussions were held on changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, in the lives of the people. In English, the students researched and wrote about author Roald Dahl and began reading the novel ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’. In Maths, the students were taught the concept of Set. Students started the topic health and hygiene with general discussions about health. They collected points for personal and community hygiene by discussing with the teacher and family members. They talked to the staff about how hygiene is maintained in the school. The students were introduced to the concept of energy and performed certain activities based on energy. Students have started working on Monologues and were introduced to solo performance. In music, students learnt to sing sargam with the harmonium and alankar. In dance, the students learnt the basic steps of Gop Rass. In Visual arts, the students have researched about- history of woodcut and woodcut artists of different countries.

In grade 7, for the theme 'Detective', in English, the students started with a brainstorming session on detectives by solving a puzzle and playing games like ‘Scotland Yard’. The students were given a hypothetical case to be solved and write a report on it. The students also researched on Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. The students started reading the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes from the book ‘A study in Scarlet’. In Humanities, the module was started with the World War I. In science, students learnt about chemical reactions and equation by studying about symbols, chemical formula and balancing the chemical equations. In Maths, they played various games through which the concept of probability was introduced to them. They also learnt the concepts of experiment, outcomes, events and sample space. Two small dramas – skits for the assembly were prepared.  The students learnt Hudos basic foot steps and researched about Hudo dance from the internet. In music, students learnt to play sargam on harmonium and learnt the song 'hum honge kamyaab'. In Visual arts, the students researched on masks of various cultures and then created masks using various types of paper.

In Grade 8, the students started the theme 'Time machine' with their views on the prediction of future and had class presentations, debate and a talk show. They started reading the novel 'Time Machine' and researched on author H. G. Wells and about the fourth dimension. In Humanities, students discussed about the different realms of the earth and atmosphere & its layers were discussed in greater detail. Students started the topic health and hygiene with a general discussion about factors affecting health. They searched on internet about different types of communicable diseases spread through air, water, food and through direct contact. Students had presented their findings in the group in front of the class. Through an activity the students found the Hb level and understood the concept of deficiency diseases. A dietician was invited and she talked about balanced diet and proper hygiene. Students had a discussion on degenerative diseases. The students were also introduced to the concept of electricity, its production and its uses. In Maths, the concept of mean, median and mode were recapitulated. In music, students learnt to play sargam on harmonium and sing them in proper swaras and method. In Visual arts, the students started their inquiry with research about 'Glass Painting' and watched a slide show on the topic 'Stained glass church windows'.
