Inside the Classroom

The Calorx School has seen some exciting classwork in the past two weeks. The whole school is currently working on "WHO WE ARE", which is the first Organizing Theme of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Each PYP class is following a Unit of Inquiry within it.

According to the PYP, WHO WE ARE delves into an exploration of the nature of the self; of our beliefs and values; of personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; of our families, friends, communities and cultures; of our rights and responsibilities; of what it means to be human.

LOWER KINDERGATEN: As part of their unit I am special in my surroundings the children studied their own body. They drew their own silhouettes and pasted cutouts of their body parts like nose, hands onto the silhouette. The children learnt songs and rhymes like "Put your left had in..", "What can I do..." related to parts of their body.

HIGHER KINDERGRTEN: As part of their unit Health Hygiene and Safety the children discussed personal hygiene as well as cleanliness around them and learnt the song, "Here we go round the Mulberry Bush..." Simultaneously they did animals around them and Learnt songs and rhymes like Old Mac Donald...", "Mary had a little lamb…” Children also read the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and made charts on animals. They even worked on Origami and represented their campus with the help of Origami.

In GRADE 1, as part of their unit I am Responsible children learnt about the various people who ensure a smooth functioning of the school. They visited Head of School’s office and made ‘Thank You’ cards for him. To teach them how to conduct interviews, the children asked questions like “What is your age?” “What work do you do?” “What do you like to eat and drink?” The children wrote down responses and made notes in class. The children were introduced to writing with strokes.  

In GRADE 2, as part of their unit The Human Body the children have learnt hand-span, foot-span and cubits. They also explored and became aware of their senses, where they tasted different liquids, blindfolded. They traced their partner’s body on a newspaper and labeled it. The children used measurement in cooking by making Tang, lemonade, ice-candy and pizza. The children created a calendar of drawings of human figure.

In GRADE 3, as part of their unit Our Hobbies and Interests, the children wrote stories and made hobby charts using cutouts from newspapers. They made drawings of hobbies and interests and also made masks from paper discs. They took up the hobby of cooking, went to the cafeteria and learnt to make chapattis and cold cocoa. The children made wind-chimes. The children also prepared their own recipe-books.

In GRADE 4, as part of their unit Our City, the children did sketches of various parts of the campus and the neighbourhood. The children brought pictures related to their city and made charts giving relevant captions. As part of pollution, the children conducted research on sources and preventive measures of various types of pollution. The children also wrote a passage on their city, places they know and have visited.

In GRADE 5, as part of their unit Our Country, the children wrote poems on India and presented it to the whole school. They gathered information about the art and artists of India and represented the information on a flying-saucer. The children were introduced to sounds and created various sounds using material found on campus. They learnt about seed germination and diversification, and criteria of classification. They wrote a letter to their pen-pals staying abroad talking about their country and why the pen-pals should visit their country.

In GRADE 6, the Project under study is National Parks and Sanctuaries and Farming. The children studied a poem on the theme of saving forests “Growing Growing Gone” and they then wrote their own poems. The children understood the various types of changes in the eco-system. The children have begun making master plans for farming. The students are in the process of making posters on wildlife for which they studied colour-wheels. The children learnt to find area and perimeter linked to their farming project. They also did a passage on the Great Indian Bustard, which is an endangered species. The children are aware of the location of the wildlife sanctuaries and parks and are aware of the wildlife habitats. The children made book covers using the “Adobe Photoshop” software. Also, as part of using the internet, the children have their own email IDs and have created a Yahoo Group ID called “wethesecretseven”.

In GRADE 7, the Project under study is Natural Calamities, Epidemics; Industrial revolution and Pollution. The children studied the various sustenance processes in their own body like digestion and respiration. They prepared a food chart that includes enzymes. The students learnt report writing and reported a calamity as a journalist. In technology, the children prepared a timeline of the Industrial Revolution. The students watched a video on Tsunami and made presentations. They learnt to make “html” pages and Powerpoint presentations with sounds. The students also designed their own I-cards and hosted a-class-day where they wore black clothes.

Grade 5 students create sounds using objects that they found on campus.  They also tried to create a music composition using these objects. 

 

The Grade 7 students, they hosted a "Class-day" where they coordinated their clothes and wore black T-Shirts.
